How we invest

Sport New Zealand aligns its investment to its strategic priorities which are focused on the vision of getting Every Body Active in Aotearoa New Zealand. How the organisation works towards its long term goals is outlined in three four-year strategic plans, the first of which covers the period 2020 – 2024. Each strategic plan sets out the target audiences for that period, specific leadership priorities and key result areas. The impact of COVID-19 has resulted in Sport NZ creating and publishing a strategic plan for 2020 – 2021 to support the sector in navigating the pandemic and rebuilding for the future across the next 12 months and beyond.

To achieve its long term goals, Sport NZ works to maintain the strength, capability and integrity of the play, active recreation and sport system. Our investment portfolio aims to achieve appropriately-balanced risk and opportunity and investment budget is allocated across three categories of investment as follows. We encourage experimentation within all investment categories. Greater use of contestable funds will enable new and different initiatives to be explored:

PARTNERSHIPS
Sport NZ partners directly with National Sports Organisations, National Recreation Organisations, Regional Sports Trusts and Disability and Education Partners to fund initiatives that engage tamariki and rangatahi in their communities.

FUNDS
Sport NZ provides funds that enable organisations and groups to supply play, active recreation and sport opportunities in their communities. Each fund supports outcomes that align to the goal of Every Body Active.

PROGRAMMES
Sport NZ runs programmes in partnership with other organisations to deliver specific interventions and build the capability of the wider play, active recreation and sport system in Aotearoa New Zealand.

COVID-19 Sector Recovery Package

As part of Budget 2020, the Government announced a $264m Sport Recovery Package. This package seeks to do three things. Help the sector recover and rebuild, assist it to strengthen and adapt, and to help it be different and better. We released details of the first wave of support available to the sector on 7 July 2020.

BoostedSport has closed

In 2021, the New Zealand Sports Foundation Charitable Trust, supported by Sport New Zealand, set out to make community funding more accessible to the sector by launching BoostedSport.

The platform responded to scarcity in funding caused by Covid-19. We’re proud to report that over the last couple of years, BoostedSport has helped 19 successful fundraising projects to raise over $263,000.

However all good things must come to an end; the BoostedSport platform has now closed. There are currently no active fundraising projects and we will not be accepting any new ones.

We’re thankful to every person that has supported BoostedSport and the community causes it has helped to raise funds for over the last couple of years.
