The Direct Fund
The Direct Fund is for schools to use on initiatives that lead to the outcomes sought from Kiwisport, i.e. more children and young people participating regularly in organised sport.
The Primary School Direct Fund is new funding for primary schools.
The Secondary School Direct Fund replaces previous funding received for sports coordinators through Sportfit.
The fund is intended to support schools in establishing new opportunities for young people to get involved in sport, and as such is not intended to cover normal operating costs such as routine property or grounds maintenance. It is also subject to normal operational funding conditions, details of which can be found in chapters 1 and 2 of the Funding, Staffing, and Allowances Handbook.
Direct fund payments to primary schools began on 1 October 2009 and secondary schools will begin on 1 January 2010. The funding equates to approximately $21 per secondary student and $13 per primary student calculated on the most recently-available roll return. The Direct Fund will be included in the Ministry of Education’s operations grant paid quarterly to schools and will be identified as a separate line in their entitlement notice.
