Sport NZ Online Governance Evaluation System
Sport New Zealand, in association with the Executive Coaching Centre (ECC) has created a new Online Governance Evaluation System (OGES) to assist in the evaluation and development of the boards of sport and recreation organisations.
The OGES is a user-friendly system that enables boards to generate a comprehensive picture of governance effectiveness, and creates clear action plans for boards to address development needs.
The system evaluates the board as a whole using the stages contained in Sport NZ’s Nine Steps to Effective Governance resource (PDF, 1.43 Mb)
Please note that order of the nine steps will be changed in the version to be published May 2012. The order of the steps in the OGES reflects this change.
Modules
The OGES contains three modules.
- The whole of board evaluation – to assess the board's processes, outputs, and behaviours as a team.
- The chair evaluation – to assess the chair's skills, performance, and opportunities for development in the role.
- The individual director evaluation – to assess the director’s skills, performance, and opportunities for development.

Benefits of using the OGES include:
- helping the board to understand its performance in relation to good practice governance
- assisting the board and management to agree on expectations
- enhancing direction setting and policy-making
- improving the performance management of the chief executive
- assisting with planning board and director development
- helping board succession planning and assessing the skills of new directors.
The information collected by the OGES is confidential and will not be used for any purpose other than the evaluation and development of boards. Sport NZ and IoD do not use individual results for anything other than establishing benchmarks to provide some comparability for organisations using the tool.
The website connection is secure and all data is encrypted before being sent between computers.
