He Oranga Poutama is a Sport New Zealand initiative supporting Māori participation in community sport and traditional physical recreation.
He Oranga Poutama: Stairway to wellbeing
One of Sport NZ's functions is to promote and support the development and implementation of physical recreation and sport in a way that is culturally appropriate to Māori.
About He Oranga Poutama
Tamaki-o-rahi, Auckland Ki-o-rahi Tournament
He Oranga Poutama has a particular emphasis on:
- kaiwhakahāere participating as leaders in their community
- increased opportunities for whānau to explore, learn and participate as Māori in sport and traditional physical recreation
- revitalisation and further development of sport and traditional physical recreation.
Investment
He Oranga Poutama investment is strongly centred on Māori cultural distinctiveness, supporting community leadership and growth in sport and recreation participation as Māori. Traditional physical recreation is also a focus.
Sport NZ invests in community organisations such as iwi authorities, Māori organisations and regional sports trusts.
Through the programme's open and contestable applications process, 11 organisations have been successful in gaining investment through till 2015.
These organisations are:
- Sport Northland
- Sport Waitakere
- Te Wharekura o Rakaumangamanga
- Sport Waikato
- Tūwharetoa Sports Trust
- Mataatua Sports Trust
- Te Papa Taakaro o Te Arawa
- Te Hauora o Turanganui-a-Kiwa
- Sport Hawkes Bay
- Sport Taranaki
- Awa Sports Trust.
Developmental Evaluation 2009-2012
During 2009-2012 investment term, an Developmental Evaluation partnership was understaken to support the implementation of the new HOP programme vision.
